What Is A BPOU? PDF Print E-mail

BPOU stands for Basic Political Operating Unit.  It is the lowest level of political organization.  In rural areas, a BPOU may be the entire county.  Usually in urban areas, the BPOU encompasses only a particular Senate District or even a single House District.

A BPOU may contain an entire city - or only part of one.  It may contain several cities - or part of several. A BPOU may encompass an entire county, or only part of one.  It may also contain parts of several counties as well.

Our BPOU for House District 53A (HD53A)  has 13 precincts, across parts of six cities, in two counties (Anoka and Ramsey). These precincts vary in size but are used to help organize votes and voting locations on election day. The BPOU is part of a hierarchy:  Our BPOU is in House District 53A, which is in Senate District 53, which in turn is in Congressional Districts 4  and 6.     View our BPOU Hierarchy

The BPOU operates as a fairly independent group.  It has its own constitution, leadership, membership, budget, etc.  In election years the BPOU endorses local candidates at its caucus.  During off-election years it holds conventions to elect officers and conduct other party business.  Your BPOU holds monthly meetings the second Tuesday of each month in the Lino Lakes City Offices.  All interested Republicans are welcome to attend these meetings. To make this even more confusing - or exciting -  the boundaries of a BPOU can change when the legislature does its redistricting every ten years and that will take place very soon in 2010.

The BPOU is also part of a hierarchy:  Our BPOU is in House District 53A, which is in Senate District 53, which in turn is in Congressional Districts 4  and 6.
